History of Xerox Photocopiers: Original and Non-Xeroxable Excellence

Imagine a world where you have to copy each and every word from a book with your own hand-writing because there is no such machine that can do the job for you. Imagine a life where reproducing documents take a week to finish because you need five men to copy them and write them all down. One word: miserable. You better thank Chester Carlson. Chester who, you ask?

Due to his extreme frustration to the slothfulness of the mimeograph machine, Chester Carlson invented a new way of copying—an invention that changed the way of life for humans all over the world. Carlson, both a research engineer and a patent attorney, invented this because his job at New York City was to make a large number of copies of important papers. His need and frustration fueled him to make the Xerox machine, which works by physically transferring some of the ink from an original letter or drawing to a moistened thin sheet of paper by means of a press.

The history of Xerox photocopiers is simple yet very interesting. The Haloid Photographic Company of Rochester founded Xerox, and it actually went on to manufacture photographic paper and equipment. The company consequently changed its name to Haloid Xerox in 1958 and then plainly “Xerox” in 1961. Xerox reached its prominence when it introduced the Xerox 914, which is actually the first plain paper photocopier that utilized the process of Elector-photography.

Xerox’s earliest venture into duplicating, as distinctive from copying, was with the Xerox 2400. The name Xerox 2400 means that this machine can create 2400 duplicates of a single document only in a span of one hour. This machine introduced the industry’s first Automatic Document Feeder, Slitter/Perforator and Collator (sorter) although still some way short of offset speeds,.
Due to the continuous demand for duplicating speed, it was eventually speeded up fifty percent more and was called the Xerox 3600 Duplicator.

Xerox became so famous that it is now used as a synonym for “photocopy” both in its noun and verb form. Sentences like “I just xeroxed your birth certificate” or “It was just a xerox of the original” can be heard in everyday conversations. The company, however, does not tolerate the common use of the word “Xerox” as a noun or verb as it might be used by the courts as a generic word. In fact, the company is engaged in the continuous acts of media and advertising to try to tell the public not to use Xerox as a verb.

The invention of the Xerox photocopier only proved that mankind has this natural desire towards change. The continuous invention of useful machines depict mans constant need for technology that can cope with man’s changing needs. The fame that this photocopy machine has garnered over the years only proves the longstanding history of Xerox photocopiers and its importance to our everyday lives. Hopefully, rain or shine, through thick and thin, the Xerox photocopier will be able to surpass all the challenges that the changing times will bring.

How To Find The Best Features For Your Photocopier!

When choosing your photocopier, there are some features that come with the machine and there are some that affect the price. This article will help in showing what to expect with your standard photocopier and what can be added along the line.

Depending on the feature some may need to be plugged into the photocopier to allow an upgrade of the machine. Although some features require the assistance of an engineer to fix it. In choosing any extra features for your photocopier machine it is important to find out what steps are involved.

For digital copiers you may add a printer module and network card so that is becomes a laser printer. By doing so, it can still produce the same amount of copies as if it were only a copier. As a result you can print documents whilst at your desk which is convenient for documents with lots of pages.

The ability to scan documents is an important feature that may need to be taken into consideration. Once all the pages have been scanned the photocopier machine can be left to create multiple copies. The optical character recognition software (OCR) is an add on that helps to convert aphotocopier into a scanner. Papers can then be turned into electronic documents that can be edited and attached to emails.

Many photocopiers have a feature for receiving and sending faxes. Along with a multiple document feeder this means that multiple page faxes can be sent if required.  All faxes that are incoming are automatically printed out once received and delivered to a different output tray from copying. Some photocopiers can be networked to your PC in order to send faxes directly from it.

A large number of photocopiers have a duplex function for double sided printing.
This should be set to default, greatly reducing the amount of paper used and thus reducing costs. Photocopiers made in the last five years are likely to include printing, scanning, faxing and photocopying in one machine, which means, instead of making a photocopy, documents can be scanned into photocopiers and sent via email or fax.

Image editing can be done on some of the more complex photocopying machines. For example, tasks like page numbering can be incorporated or even adding the date. Some have the option of rotating scanned images, matching with the paper supply and reducing adjustments before hand,

We have looked at a wide range of features that come as standard with photocopiers and those that can be added later. Although it is important to consider energy consumption with photocopiers that save energy while not in use.

However, when scanners became popular, they started to be attached to printers themselves and so suddenly ink jet printers were able to copy. Why scan and print when you could simply copy with one press of the button? Photocopiers are now incredibly popular in all offices and also very cheap to run. Luckily we’ve embraced technology and the office has become and easier place to work.

Knowing How to Maintain Your Photocopier Machine

Every office photocopier machine needs to be well maintained for its longevity, also minimizing costly expenses from petty breakdowns. Here are some basic photocopier maintenance tips that will help ensure your photocopier’s lifespan and performance.

1. It is a daily regimen to clean the scanner glass, since this affects the quality of scan the most. Use an anti-static cleaner liquid when wiping the glass, because daily usage can cause small particles and debris to build up.

2. Cleaning the Drum when scheduled .

The drum of the photocopier is attached to a toner cartridge. Light emitting from it makes it electrically conductive. It is mainly responsible for attaching toner and paper together. Use a Mylar Bar to clean the photocopier drum and make use of a plastic or rubber blade to wipe this part and remove the extra toner.

3. Cleaning the Fuser as scheduled .

Using a very light coat of silicon oil, pour this on a smooth rug and wipe the fuser. It is responsible for melting and pressing the toner impression onto the paper. Dry and wipe it off with a new, dry cloth.

4. Vacuuming toner copier as scheduled .

Do not use a typical vacuum cleaner when cleaning the toner copier. Use a toner vacuum that is certainly appropriate only for photocopiers. A word of caution, using a standard vacuum cleaner will result in electric shock from the buildup of static charge from the toner.

By using the appropriate vacuum meant for photocopiers, your photocopier will be able to regulate the smooth flow of ink, giving you good quality photocopies.

5. Double check your cleaning material equipment before cleaning the photocopier.

Finally, when using the office photocopier, always keep the instruction manual right next to your photocopier.
Be aware of the different parts of the photocopier machine, also how to handle and use it properly, together with maintenance tips. This will result in the longevity of the business machine.

If you have some inquiries or concerns, ask your photocopier technician and they will fully explain to you how to handle, maintain, and clean the photocopier. If some parts need to be replaced or repaired, your technician can determine the best solution for you.

Prior to using your photocopier machine, just be sure to know how to clean it properly, and that you can determine if there are any technical problems that need technical expertise. By doing so, you will prolong the lifespan of your photocopier, and maximize its output for your office use.
